Dr Matthew D Whittle (A.k.a. Dr MJ Coco) earned a Ph.D. from The University of California, Santa Barbara in 2013. His dissertation research focused on the economics of small-scale intensive farming and horticulture. During his graduate studies he studied all aspects of horticulture and helped to manage the campus garden. After completing his Ph.D., Dr Whittle taught in the University of California and California State University systems.

In 2018, he recognized that there was a need for his specific area of expertise in the rapidly growing cannabis industry. He wrote the book “Coco for Cannabis: A Grower’s Guide” and started the website CocoforCannabis.com. In the process, he adopted the penname, Dr MJ Coco, which is how he is now known throughout the cannabis industry.
